Sofprene T ® (SBS)

Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene Compound

Sofprene T® is a Thermoplastic Elastomer (TPE) obtained by deeply mixing an elastomeric phase, consisting of SBS (block copolymer Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene) rubber to a plastic phase which is usually made either of polyolefinic or styrenic polymers.

Its plastic phase allows Sofprene T® to be processed in an easy and inexpensive way by means of traditional technologies used for thermoplastic materials and to be fully recyclable, whereas its elastomeric phase features typically rubber-like specifications such as excellent elastic recovery and softness. Sofprene T® can successfully preserve such characteristics even at very low temperature (-50°C).
The unsaturated nature of the SBS rubber makes Sofprene T® vulnerable to UV-rays, heat and ozone, however, it is possible to improve its resistance to these agents by using proper additives.

Sofprene T® has many interesting characteristics and is available in a wide range of materials:
  • Wide hardness range from 25 ShA to 40 ShD scale
  • Density from 0,9 g/cm3 to 1,25 g/cm3
  • Operating temperature from -50 °C to +60 °C
  • High elastic recovery both at low and room temperature
  • Excellent resistance to several chemical agents, i.e. bases, acids, alcohols, detergents, water solutions
  • High thermal and electric insulation values
  • Good abrasion resistance
  • Specific rheology for each type of process
  • Excellent colourability

Special grades featuring the following specifications are also available:
  • High transparency
  • Suitability for food contact
  • Adhesion on polystyrene (PS) and other polymers having a similar chemical nature
  • Additional protection against heat and UV-rays
  • Extrusion grades available on request, starting from 40ShA hardness


Shock-absorbers for bed slats, wheels, anti-shocks profiles.


Non-slip mats, handles for tools, overmoulded rubber lips for dustpan and squeegees, plungers.


Gaskets for drip devices.


Wheels, handles, seats, little toys.
Sofprene T® is suitable for co-moulding and co-extrusion with polypropylene (PP) and its compounds. Some special grades for heat adhesion on polystyrene (PS) are also available.
Sofprene T® can be processed through injection-moulding and extrusion. Normally it does not require drying before processing, apart from some special grades.
PLASTICIZING SCREW: polyolefins screws having L/D ratio ≥ 20 and compression ratio ranging from 2.5 to 3.5:1 are the most suitable
INJECTION SPEED: medium-high
RUNNERS: it is advisable to use runners which are as short as possible, having a circular section and a gradually decreasing flow-through diameter
INJECTION POINTS: usually having circular section and diameter ≥ 0.7 mm. We recommend not to use injection points having a diameter <0.3 mm without prior selection of the appropriate grades to be agreed with SO.F.TER. Technical Support
AIR VENTS: the mould should be provided with appropriate air vents (diameter 0.03 - 0.05 mm)
SHRINKAGE: generally ranging from 0,4% to 1,5% depending on the material hardness
DRYING: usually not necessary

Sofprene T® is a fully recyclable material and it can be reused after regrinding. The user shall always verify that the compound obtained by mixing virgin and reground material is suitable for the specific application and meets the requirements.
This product should be stored in a covered facility and kept away from moisture and heat.
